Furniture buying guide

Furniture is not something you buy every year. This step-by-step guide explains what to check before buying a sofa, bedroom set or dining set so you choose something you will be happy with for years.

Step one: measure your space

First measure the room's length and width, and sketch doors, windows, radiators, sockets and walkways on a sheet of paper. As a rule, leave about 45 cm between the sofa and the coffee table, and at least 80 to 90 cm along the main walkways. Do not forget the width of your front door, staircase and lift: a sofa that will not fit through the door is no use, however beautiful.

Step two: decide how you will use it

Is this sofa for formal guests or everyday family life? Classic and royal designs, or sofas with firmer seats and tailored shapes, suit formal reception rooms. For a family lounge and watching TV, a sectional or deeper sofa with a softer seat is more comfortable. If you have overnight guests now and then, consider a sofa bed.

Step three: judge the build quality

Frame The frame should be kiln-dried hardwood; beech and alder are reliable choices. Ask how the joints are secured. Chipboard frames or undried timber creak and loosen over time.

Foam Seat-foam density is the biggest factor in how well a sofa keeps its shape. Low-density foam sags within months. Ask for the density figure in kg/m³.

Upholstery Seams should be straight and even, stitches small and tight, and patterns aligned between the cushions and the body.

Step four: fabric and colour

For homes with children and pets, choose dense, stain-resistant fabrics such as chenille or microfibre in mid-tones. Velvet adds drama and bouclé a modern look. Coordinate the sofa with your floor, walls and curtains. If you are unsure, a neutral body with bolder cushions is the safest choice. See our fabric and care guide for more.

Bedroom sets

  • Match the bed to the mattress; standard Iranian double beds usually take a 160 or 180 × 200 cm mattress.
  • Leave at least 60 cm beside the bed and in front of the wardrobe for doors to open.
  • Check the carcass material (good-quality MDF with a scratch-resistant finish), soft-close hardware and a sturdy bed base.

Dining sets

  • Allow about 60 cm of table length per person.
  • Leave at least 90 cm between the table edge and the wall so chairs can be pulled back.
  • Round tables suit small or square rooms; rectangular tables suit long rooms.
