The sofa is the most used piece of furniture in any home: where the family gathers, watches films, receives guests and occasionally naps. A good sofa therefore needs three things together: a seat that does not sag after years, a frame that neither creaks nor loosens, and a fabric that does not wear out quickly with daily use.

Types of sofa in this category

• Sectional (L-shaped) sofas: for large living rooms and family lounges, seating the most people in the least space, built left- or right-facing.
• Chesterfields: with deep-button tufting and rolled arms; classic in character, yet striking in modern rooms too.
• Sofa beds: for compact homes, guest rooms or families who host overnight visitors.
• Loveseats: two- or three-seaters for small spaces, bedrooms and studies.
• Armchairs: for a reading corner or to complete a living-room set.

Choosing the right sofa

Size: leave about 45 cm between the sofa and coffee table and at least 80 cm for walkways. A seat depth of 55 to 60 cm suits upright sitting; 60 to 70 cm is better for lounging.

Seating: for a family of four, a seven-seat set (three-seater, two-seater and two armchairs) or a five- to six-seat sectional is usually enough. If you host large gatherings, consider a nine-seat set or a sectional plus two armchairs.

Fabric: chenille for everyday family use, velvet for drama, bouclé for a modern look. With children or pets, choose mid-tones and stain-resistant fabric.
